Why I Wrote “America’s Backbone” ~ I wrote “America’s Backbone” because too many of the real heroes in this country are being overlooked. While billionaires dodge taxes and politicians chase headlines, it’s the everyday Americans—the ones with calloused hands, aching backs, and hearts full of grit—who are holding this nation together. This song is for them.
It’s for the men and women in hard hats swinging hammers through rain and heat, laying the roads we drive on and wiring the buildings we live in. It’s for the truckers hauling across midnight highways so shelves stay stocked and families stay fed. It’s for the veterans who stood on battlefields and now stand tall in our communities, often without the support they were promised.
“America’s Backbone” honors the nurses, EMTs, and caregivers who worked double shifts during the darkest days of the pandemic. It honors the snowplow drivers clearing roads at 3 a.m., the factory workers keeping the gears of industry turning, the farmers feeding us from sunrise to sundown, and the grocery clerks and sanitation crews who showed up every day when the world seemed to shut down.
It’s also for the ones who raised their voices when rights were under attack—union organizers, civil rights workers, and community leaders who never stopped pushing for a more just and fair America.
Every verse in this song is a question, because too often we don’t ask. We don’t ask who built that bridge, who worked through the night to restore the power, who stood in line with a lunchbox and a dream. The chorus answers it loud and proud: they’re America’s backbone. Not the CEOs, not the lobbyists—but the workers. The veterans. The essential. The invisible giants.
I wrote this as a tribute, but also as a reminder: this country doesn’t stand on gold-plated towers. It stands on steel-toed boots, stitched-up scrubs, and quiet acts of courage performed every single day.

I was raised to believe that “hate” is a powerful word, not to be thrown around carelessly. My mom made sure of that. If I didn’t like someone, she taught me to find another way to describe it—frustrated, disappointed, even disgusted. But never hate. Hate, she believed, was corrosive. It eats away at you, drags you down to the level of the very thing you despise.
But damn if Donald Trump isn’t testing me.
Every day, he gives me another reason to want to throw my mother’s lesson out the window. The lies, the cruelty, the endless corruption, the shameless grift, the way he plays people against each other like it’s all just a reality show—how do you not hate that? How do you not hate a man who delights in making others suffer, who disrespects veterans, who coddles dictators, who turns Americans against one another for his own gain?
That’s why I wrote "Mom Taught Me Not to Hate But Trump Is Testing Me". This song is my confession, my catharsis, my way of wrestling with what so many of us feel but don’t always say out loud. It’s for everyone who’s been struggling to hold on to their humanity in the face of Trump’s cruelty. As a 100% Army-disabled veteran, I felt something deep stir inside me. I couldn’t just watch and move on. I had to put my emotions into words.
After writing about it for my blog, I realized words alone weren’t enough. The weight of their struggle, the depth of their courage—it needed something more. So, I picked up my guitar, sat at my piano, and poured everything I was feeling into a song.

These comparisons, though controversial, inspired me to create a work that challenges us to remember the lessons of history.
A Sonic Journey into the Past
"History's Echo" opens with a haunting instrumental intro that sets the stage for what’s to come. Picture the sound of a distant, eerie violin weaving through low, rumbling drums, accompanied by a ghostly choir softly humming as if echoing voices from another era. Over this atmospheric soundscape, faint radio static crackles while snippets of old speeches fade in and out—whispers of history cautioning us against repeating its mistakes. As the sound swells, tension builds, only to give way to a chilling silence before the first words are sung.
This unconventional musical approach was very intentional. I wanted the music behind the lyrics to evoke emotions and images that challenge our perceptions, inviting you to not only listen but to feel the weight of the historical echoes in every note.

Recent years have prompted me to reflect on how history can sometimes seem to repeat itself. While the situations of the early 1930s in Germany and today are not identical, there are disturbing similarities that remind us to stay vigilant. In "History's Echo," I delve into these parallels:

In the aftermath of World War I, Germany faced massive unemployment, hyperinflation, and national humiliation, creating fertile ground for extremist ideologies. Today, although our economic challenges manifest differently, globalization, rapid technological change, and periodic financial crises continue to fuel a sense of instability. In both eras, desperate times have often paved the way for political opportunists offering simplistic answers to complex problems.
The Resurgence of Nationalism and Populism
The nationalist fervor that helped propel extremist movements in the 1930s is resurfacing in modern political discourse. Just as feelings of betrayal and loss fueled a desire for a return to a perceived glorious past in Germany, similar themes are emerging today. I promised myself—and all of you—that I wouldn’t watch Donald Trump’s inauguration today. I wasn’t ready to lend an ear to what I expected to be another performance of divisive rhetoric. But as the clock struck noon, curiosity got the better of me. Against my better judgment, I tuned in, hoping that maybe, just maybe, Trump would surprise us and speak to the nation with unity, humility, and hope.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Trump’s speech wasn’t just disappointing; it was a full-blown assault on everything I hoped a president’s words could be. Instead of extending a hand to all Americans, he doubled down on hatred, self-promotion, and fear-mongering. It was a speech so devoid of grace and inclusivity that it left me physically sick to my stomach.
As much as I wanted to channel my feelings into this blog post, I realized that words alone weren’t enough to convey the depth of my reaction. So, I turned to the only medium that could truly capture what I felt: music.
Today, I’m sharing a song that was born from the frustration, disappointment, and hope that Trump’s speech stirred in me. A couple of days ago, I found myself watching Robin Hood on Netflix. About halfway through, I realized my attention had drifted. My mind, it seemed, wasn’t as interested in the film as it was in the striking parallels between this legendary tale and the political landscape we find ourselves in today.
Robin Hood’s story is a classic battle of good versus evil, compassion versus greed. And as I thought about it, I couldn’t help but see Robin and his merry band as a metaphor for the Democrats—fighting for the people, standing up against the injustices of the rich and powerful. Meanwhile, the Sheriff of Nottingham? That cruel, selfish, power-hungry villain? Well, if you’re thinking what I’m thinking, you already know who fits that bill. Yes, Donald Trump.
As these thoughts took root, inspiration struck. I grabbed my pen, let the ideas flow, and turned this modern-day Robin Hood tale into a song. I titled it Robin of the People. This is more than just an act of international goodwill—it’s a powerful reminder that humanity transcends borders. While Ukraine fights its own battles for freedom and survival, its people have not forgotten the meaning of unity and compassion. These brave men and women have traveled thousands of miles to help protect California's people, homes, and natural treasures from the relentless advance of fire.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, your leadership inspires not only your nation but the world. Your commitment to aiding others, even in Ukraine’s darkest hours, exemplifies what true global citizenship looks like. The courage and selflessness of your firefighters mirror the resilience your country has shown in the face of hardship.

Ah, Melania Trump’s hat. A fashion enigma that has haunted me since the moment Donald Trump took the oath of office. While others were debating the crowd size or cringing at the inaugural speech, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from that hat. It was like watching a Hitchcock movie—so unsettling yet impossible to look away.
I’m convinced it wasn’t just a hat; it was a statement, a warning, maybe even a coded message to extraterrestrials. The sharp angles, the dramatic shadow—it was less of an accessory and more of a force field. I kept half-expecting it to start rotating, beam Melania up, and leave us all standing there wondering what we just witnessed.
Naturally, as a songwriter, I couldn’t leave this head-scratcher alone. I composed a song about it. Yes, Melania’s hat inspired me musically. (Art comes from strange places, folks.) Some of you told me about your dads, brothers, sons, and daughters who have worn the uniform, and others shared the heartbreak of losing loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their all for this country.
Each and every one of your messages has left a lasting impact on me. Your stories are powerful, emotional, and a testament to the courage and resilience that define the heart of our nation. They’ve inspired me more than words can express, and I felt compelled to do something to honor you.
That’s why I wrote a song for YOU. - I’ve titled it "Stand and Prevail" because it reflects the strength, conviction, and unwavering commitment I’ve seen in the stories you’ve shared.

Thanksgiving: A Battle for Decency
Thanksgiving is meant for joy and connection, a day to set differences aside. But sometimes, the divide is too great for turkey and pie to bridge. This year, my dinner turned into a confrontation I couldn’t avoid.
Why do MAGA family members feel entitled to spew hateful, racist opinions without consequences? My dad, once my role model, has gone so far down the MAGA rabbit hole that every conversation feels hijacked by anger and misinformation. But this year, he crossed a line—making a racist comment about a biracial family member.
I had no choice but to say:
“Dad, this might be the end of our relationship. I won’t tolerate hateful, racist comments anymore.”
His response? Typical MAGA: “I’m not allowed to have an opinion? You’ll write me off over politics?”
Racism isn’t an opinion; it’s a moral failing. This isn’t about politics—it’s about decency. Love doesn’t mean silence, and family doesn’t mean enabling hatred.
In the days after, I channeled the pain into a song for anyone who’s ever chosen truth over “keeping the peace.” This Thanksgiving, I didn’t lose myself—I found the courage to say, “Enough.” Humanity isn’t up for debate.

His journey, from the peanut fields of Plains, Georgia, to the halls of the White House, is a testament to what compassion and determination can achieve.
President Carter was more than a leader; he was a hero to me and countless others who believe in justice and equality. He showed us that the world is one family and that unity, not division, is the path forward. Whether it was brokering peace at Camp David or swinging a hammer for Habitat for Humanity, Carter’s life was a symphony of service and love.
Writing this song in his memory came naturally as if the words and melody had been waiting for this moment. It’s one of the fastest songs I’ve ever written, and I’m humbled to share it with you. As someone of Latin descent with roots in Portugal, I feel this is both natural and deeply personal. But what I didn’t anticipate was the emotional weight of doing justice to the people who shape lives every single day.

How do you thank them for the lives they’ve touched, the sacrifices they’ve made, and the dreams they’ve nurtured? I wanted it to be perfect—not just for Liz but for every teacher out there who has ever poured their soul into the classroom.
Last night, after countless revisions and late-night brainstorming sessions, my band and I finally brought the words to life. We put everything into it—the gratitude, the admiration, the stories that teachers like Liz inspire. And as the music filled the room, I felt something shift.
